Wildwood Weekend 2014 - June 6-8
Update (March 3, 2014)
Hi All: Here’s WILDWOOD Email #2.
Well… here in the Philly / Wilmington / tri-state area, we’re about to get nailed with yet another snow storm! Everybody around here has had it up to their #%&^$s with winter!!! All the more reason to look forward to our annual weekend in Wildwood, NJ, and to start making plans for the June 6-8 event in conjunction with the annual New Jersey Elks Convention.
As we said we would do in Email #1 on Feb 16, here’s information about our hotel. As we have several times over the years, we’re again staying at the Adventurer Oceanfront Inn located at 5401 Ocean Avenue in Wildwood Crest. It’s right off the beach at the south end of the boardwalk, and about 6 blocks from Kelly’s (Atlantic & Montgomery Aves). They have more than a dozen types of rooms from which to choose, starting at $115 per night (plus tax), with a two-night minimum. Their price range is pretty much the norm in Wildwood these days, and it meets the “3Cees” (CCC) criteria - - - Clean, Comfortable, and Convenient. You can check their website for room rates and other information at www.adventurerinn.com . You can also call these numbers to make a reservation: 609-522-0029 (winter) / 609-722-1200 (summer) / 800-232-7873 (anytime, toll free).
Be sure to mention that you’re with the BLUE ROCK DRUM CORPS. That won’t get you any kind of a discount or anything, but it’s a little bit of “P.R.” and acknowledgement that we’re there as a group. While the Adventurer will be our gathering place for the weekend, you can certainly book a room elsewhere if you please. Or you don’t have to stay the weekend at all; you can just stop by any time for any of the informal get-togethers. Parking at the Adventurer is for Registered Guests only (one space per room), so if you’re not Registered there, you’ll have to find street parking nearby.
As noted in the previous email, the usual activities will include:
· Friday - Gather, meet & greet. Old friends getting together, maybe having a few cold brews. It could include getting groups of friends together and going out for lunch or dinner at the many restaurants in and around Wildwood. Or it could be chipping-in and ordering pizzas. For you golfers, there’s the annual Golf Tournament sponsored by our “Golden Brothers” in the Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights Alumni Corps. Start lining up your foursomes now.
· Saturday - The Elks Parade down Atlantic Avenue, starting at 12 noon. The Corps, Bands, and other groups march down the old parade route, presenting their best for us as we gather at Kelly’s Café to cheer them on! After the parade, many of the Corps put on concerts around town or for their sponsoring Elks Lodge. Saturday night could be dinner out with friends, visiting Corps parties around town, and relaxing back at the hotel.
· Sunday - Maybe you’ll want to sleep-in a little (Check-Out time is 11:00am), or maybe join folks for breakfast. (There’s a good restaurant right there in the Adventurer.) A stroll on the Boardwalk could be in order, too. Then share some “goodbyes” with friends, and make your way back home.
It’s still early to predict numbers, but feedback from folks indicates we should have a good turnout. Some out-of-towners coming from Florida include Gerry Flynn, Skeeter Varner, and Jim Tarlton. And it looks like Larry & Laurie Seeney will be driving up from North Carolina. Chuck Purcell may be cruising in from Dayton, Ohio. Heard a rumor that Vicki (Drummond) Mell may be coming up from Atlanta. And beyond the “usual suspects”, a few local folks who we haven’t seen in a while may be showing up this year, and could include Bob “Bobbo” McLaughlin, Gail O’Connor, Paula (Tucker) Boulden, and yes… maybe even Vernon “Fergie” Ferguson.
As things develop, we’ll continue to send out occasional emails. You can also check the BR website at www.bluerock.us where Webmaster Joe (Gerry) Flynn will post information and updates. Let us know if you’re planning to attend - - - and be sure to spread the word to other Blue Rock comrades. See you in WILDWOOD!
Yours in the bond,
Harry P. Jenkins
P.S.: A word to the wise… Book your room ASAP!!! As it gets closer to summer, they fill up FAST!!!

Wildwood weekend 2014 - June 6-8
Hi All: Sitting here with a foot of snow on the ground and the temperature at 17 degrees, it’s not exactly conducive to thinking of our annual June weekend in Wildwood, NJ. Although(???)… maybe thoughts of warmer weather and surf and sand are just what we need to contemplate, in order to get us past the cabin fever we’re suffering. If you’re one of those Rocky alums who lives in warmer climes, well good for you --- but I’m sure you can remember your winter days back in Delaware and the tri-state area. So --- with winter sure to end, and spring and summer sure to follow, it’s time to start planning for our WILDWOOD WEEKEND.
This email will serve as notice to put the dates on your calendar. The dates this year are June 6-8, Friday thru Sunday, in conjunction with the annual New Jersey Elks Convention. While we’re not planning a full-blown, organized reunion this year, we’ll make some arrangements for rooms at a convenient and reasonably priced hotel / motel, which will serve as our gathering place for the weekend. We’ll get the information out via email, and Webmaster Joe (Gerry) Flynn will post it on the BR website. You will have to follow-up by making your own room reservation. But you do NOT have to book a room to attend; you can just stop by for the Saturday activities, or book a room anywhere you please. We’ll certainly partake of the usual activities. These will include:
· Friday - Gather, meet & greet. Old friends getting together, maybe having a few cold brews. It could include getting groups of friends together and going out for lunch or dinner at the many restaurants in and around Wildwood. Or it could be chipping-in and ordering pizzas. I know it’s early to predict numbers, but it’s looking like we’ll be having another good turn-out. Gerry Flynn has already booked his flight up from Florida. A few members we haven’t seen at this event will also be showing up this year, and could include Jim Tarlton (also flying up from Florida), Bob McLaughlin, Gail O’Connor, and maybe a few other surprise appearances!
As things develop, we’ll send subsequent emails and post on the BR website with more information and details. Let us know if you’re planning to attend --- and be sure to spread the word to other Blue Rock comrades. See you in WILDWOOD!
